When checking into The Cape, a Thompson Hotel, we couldn’t help but gape across the bay at El Arco, the rock arch that’s the iconic symbol of Los Cabos, bathed in gold as the sun set behind it. After our stay at this new property in Cabo San Lucas — and after taking in countless views of the arch from all over the resort — we decided it had to be the best vista in the area.
The Cape opened its doors last June, and is the first venture in Mexico for Thompson Hotels, which manages a collection of deluxe boutique properties in New York City, Miami, London and other urban destinations, as well as a more recent property in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.
According to Adriana Silva, sales and public relations manager for the hotel, The Cape aims to set itself apart from other high-end properties in Los Cabos.
“This is a luxury hotel for the young and the young at heart,” she said.
The property’s design blends modern style with contemporary artistic elements, including a life-size whale sculpture made out of driftwood in the open-air lobby. Beyond the decor, The Cape’s architecture places an emphasis on the area’s stunning landscape.
There are 10 different styles of accommodations in two buildings, but all 161 guestrooms look out to the sea. We stayed in one of the popular Grand Terrace rooms, which are almost 600 square feet and located on the first and second floors of the main building. Each Grand Terrace room has an extra-large terrace, a king-size bed with a brown-leather headboard, distressed blue-and-white tile floors and a freestanding copper bathtub in the bedroom. Surf photos on the walls and white louvered closet doors add a beachy feel. Rooms in the main building also have swinging daybeds.
Even the bathroom is designed around the ocean views: Guests can see through the glass shower wall out to the sea.
Rooms come with some unusual amenities, as well. We couldn’t resist finishing the hand-etched crystal bottle of tequila that’s distilled especially for The Cape and presented with orange slices and chili salt. Other amenities include cotton kimono robes and binoculars for spotting whales.
In the mornings, we enjoyed watching surfers at the secluded beach in front of the hotel, then lounging with a book in a breezy curtained cabana by the oceanfront infinity pool.
Inevitably, we would drift off to sleep listening to the sounds of the rolling surf and the relaxing music played at the pool.
For sunset cocktails, The Rooftop is the place to be. It’s the only rooftop lounge in Los Cabos, and features small lush gardens and shallow ponds. A blazing fire pit takes the evening nip out of the air.
Visitors should also be sure to try Manta, an avant-garde restaurant located in the hotel that features Peruvian, Mexican and Japanese fusion. It’s run by celebrity chef Enrique Olvera, whose Pujol in Mexico City is widely regarded as one of Mexico’s best restaurants. To appreciate the variety of tastes, dishes — such as the catch of the day with a ginger garlic foam or grilled octopus with chorizo mayo — are best shared.
Here, too, the views are staggering — but that’s all part of a typical glorious day at The Cape.
