Tonantzin Ceremony Reigns at Casa del Mar

Jun 06, 2005

Spa aficionados are in for a new treatment that focuses on living in the moment. Situated in the trendy Cabo San Lucas hotel corridor, the 56-suite Casa del Mar Beach, Golf & Spa Resort’s Suenos del Mar Spa has been making a name for itself with its wide range of treatments. Spa guests enjoy Suenos-style pampering with herbal and aroma wraps, massages, facials, skin care treatments and therapeutic bodywork.

Recently, the progressive facility has added the indigenous Tonantzin Ceremony spa treatment. Inspired by the Aztec goddess, Tonantzin, this relaxing spiritual experience is designed to bring peace and harmony by unifying the body, mind and spirit through meditation.

“Casa del Mar is a Mexican hacienda-style resort where many of Mexico’s ancient traditions are kept, and the Tonantzin ritual is not an exception,” stated Ana Paula Valle, spa manager. “This ceremony meets its own objective of bringing relaxation and peace to our guests within the luxurious Mexican experience at Casa del Mar.”

The resort’s setting couldn’t be better for this type of treatment. The ritual takes place at sunset on the resort’s quiet beach. A shaman welcomes guests into the circular bonfire with four doors representing the four elements of nature earth, air, fire and water.

“The ceremony is guided by the shaman as it used to be in the Aztec times, and throughout the meditation several traditional ingredients are used,” explained Valle.

After an initial aura cleansing, the Tonantzin treatment relies on use of essential oils to lead participants into a meditative state. The shaman recognizes the elements and explains how each resides in the mind, body and spirit.

Participants are encouraged to live fully in the present. The four elements replace the bad energies within for the good energies they offer. Finally, the shaman cleanses the bad energies with sacred feathers while participants receive a soothing cup of tea.

Available through June 25 and again from Nov. 1- May 31, 2006, the treatment is $54 per person.

Casa del Mar Beach, Golf & Spa Resort is part of the Cabo Real resort development, known as "the Pebble Beach of Mexico.” Guests have access to the championship 18-hole Cabo Real Golf Course, four tennis courts and a paddle tennis court (all lighted for night play). In addition to its treatments and services, Suenos del Mar Spa also features a Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and fully-equipped gym.

While not available in the summer, the property’s “Siesta Sundays” package will be offered again from Nov. 1-Dec. 20. Guests arriving on Sunday and staying for four nights will receive a special 30 percent savings off regular rates from $269 per night in the deluxe ocean view category. Bonus amenities will include airport transfers, complimentary shuttle to Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, a 25 percent discount on golf at the Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed Cabo Real Championship Golf Course and unlimited use of the spa’s Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. All rooms are subject to a 10 percent service charge and 12 percent government tax.
