Review: Mondrian Mexico City Condesa

There are certain places that really make you feel like you have arrived. Such was the case when I stepped onto the large balcony of my Skyline Terrace Suite at Mondrian Mexico City Condesa, a beautiful 183-room property that opened in 2022 in the city’s chic Condesa neighborhood.

Set in a 1960 office building, Mondrian Mexico City Condesa marks the Mondrian brand’s first foray into Latin America. And it’s a stunning example of how a hotelier can blend midcentury-modern design with contemporary style and 21st-century amenities. The tasteful accommodations are accented by artsy bursts of color, and the sizable suites are graced with large balconies that offer commanding views of the city. As soon as I stepped through the door of my suite, I knew I’d found one of my new favorite hotels in Mexico City.

Venues — and Vibes — at Mondrian Mexico City Condesa

I was transported by the hotel’s ambience as soon as I entered the building. The hotel is part of an architecturally significant midcentury complex that also houses Andaz Mexico City Condesa. Additionally, Mondrian Mexico City Condesa is part of the Ennismore and Accor portfolios and has a smaller room count and a more intimate reception area; it is furnished with a pool table and two swings.

Gorgeous floor tiles, reminiscent of the sidewalks of Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach, flow from the lobby area into a central courtyard, where a pristinely maintained vintage Mustang from the 1960s provides great photo opportunities for guests looking to immerse themselves in the building’s era. Just a few steps away, original tiled murals and a fountain bring still more character to the hotel.

Also in the courtyard is La Terraza, a loungey, open-air restaurant where I gathered around a tabletop firepit with my friend Paloma for a delicious dinner of fish tacos and cheesecake, accompanied by mezcalita cocktails. Nearby, The Flower Shop cleverly combines the services of a florist, cafe and wine bar in an attractive package.

The hotel’s playfully hip vibe is even visible in the elevators, which are decorated with life-size images of various people in colorful, fashion-forward garb. It’s a photo-worthy way to get to Skybar Condesa, a rooftop venue serving breakfast, lunch and dinner; after dark, it hosts live DJs and is the perfect place for a drink.

The Mondrian shares some noteworthy facilities with the Andaz, including a well-equipped, 24-hour fitness center and Pasana Spa, which offers a variety of treatments. And although I wasn’t traveling with a pet, I was especially drawn to the Wooftop Beer Garden & Canine Club, a pet-friendly venue located within the complex that has indoor and outdoor spaces for travelers and locals alike to relax with their furry friends (the Mondrian is a pet-friendly property).

The hotel’s location is another plus: Condesa is one of Mexico City’s trendiest and most beautiful neighborhoods, and a variety of cafes, restaurants, bars and shops are within a few blocks from the property. I also enjoyed taking morning strolls through Parque Mexico, one of the city’s leafy small parks, which is also just a few blocks away.

Guestrooms at Mondrian Mexico City Condesa

My biggest “wow” moment came when I entered my spacious Skyline Terrace Suite, where an entire wall featured floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors that allowed for a spectacular view of the large balcony and city beyond.

The room itself was especially inviting, with a dining area (complete with large minibar), a living area with an oversized couch and a sleeping area with a comfy, king-size bed. A tangerine-colored glass wall divided the living and dining areas from the bathroom, where a seductively curved bathtub was the most prominent visual element.

Indeed, the hotel’s eye-catching design and decor are among the features I liked the most about this hotel. The vibrant mural above my bed was created by artist Ara Starck (daughter of French industrial designer and architect Philippe Starck), whose work appears in all guestrooms. On another wall of my room, a reproduction of one of the original plans for the building complex provided a fascinating glimpse into the roots of its midcentury modern design.

With its enviable location, unique style and spacious suites, Mondrian Mexico City Condesa is an ideal choice for style-conscious travelers looking to stay in the heart of one of the city’s most interesting neighborhoods.
