Pleasant Adds Puerto Penasco to 2008 Program

May 06, 2008

Pleasant Holidays has announced the addition of Puerto Peñasco, or Rocky Point, to its 2008 Mexico travel program. With Rocky Point, Pleasant Holidays now features 24 Mexico destinations and 185 hotels, one of the most of any U.S. travel company.

Located in Mexico’s northwest State of Sonora, Puerto Penasco is 62 miles south of the U.S. border and the closest beach resort to Arizona. It is a 1 ½-hour flight from Los Angeles and approximately a four-hour drive from Phoenix. While Rocky Point has been a popular vacation destination for many years, it has recently been developed into a resort town for travelers to enjoy the sea, sun, beaches, dining, golf and fishing.

“Pleasant Holidays is very excited to offer vacation packages to Puerto Penasco with luxury resorts on the magnificent Sea of Cortez, which make romantic weekends and family vacations convenient and affordable,” said Jack E. Richards, Pleasant Holidays’ president and chief executive officer.

The wholesaler will showcase two distinctive properties in the destination the Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort and Mayan Palace Puerto Peñasco.

A condominium-style resort, Las Palomas’ 430 oceanfront one-, two- and three-bedroom guest suites are individually decorated. Each features an electronic key system, satellite television, DVD players, high-speed Internet connection, fully-equipped kitchen, laundry facilities and patio or balcony with ocean view.

The resort is the only one in Rocky Point with a golf course located on site. Designed by Forrest Richardson and the late Jack Snyder, The Links at Las Palomas Golf Club is an 18-hole, 72 par challenge that winds through the desert sand dunes and back along the Sea of Cortez.

For those seeking a bit of fun in the sun, Las Palomas definitely delivers. The resort has an impressive ten swimming pools with lazy rivers, water slide and swim-up bars. Other amenities include poolside massage services, traditional beachside palapas, a fitness center, restaurant, bar, barbeque areas and a concierge.

Situated on nearly four miles of beach, the Mayan Palace features two hard surface tennis courts, a swimming pool, the Brio Health Spa & Fitness Center with indoor pool, Bakal Cafe Restaurant, a snack/pool bar, lobby bar, lounge and Internet room.

All air-conditioned suites include a kitchenette, separate living room, electronic safe, ceiling fans, cable television and bedroom with king size beds. Adjoining master rooms and suites can be combined to accommodate larger families.

Three-night land-only packages for travel June 1- Aug. 19, 2008 begin at $285 for Mayan Palace Puerto Penasco and $334 for Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort. Based on double occupancy, prices are per person and include hotel taxes.

Aside from luxury accommodations, Rocky Point provides a variety of activities and recreation. Unique ocean conditions in this town create extreme tides of up to 23 feet between high and low. This also produces unique marine life. Swimming in the area is very safe and emulates lake conditions, with no rip tides and very calm waters unless it’s windy.

Visitors can watch sunrise and sunset on the same ocean horizon. Among Rocky Point’s favored beaches are Playa Hermosa, Playa La Joya and Playa Encanto. Popular activities include swimming, snorkeling, paddle boating, surfing, wind surfing, fishing, parasailing and kayaking.

Attractions include the Center for Technological Sea Studies and Aqua Culture, an aquarium exhibit that provides an up close look at the native species of the inter-tidal zone and the northern Gulf Coast. Here, visitors can view sea turtles, octopus, sea horses, shrimp, various fish species and sea lions.

Another highlight includes the Grand Pinacate and Grand Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve, considered one of the most unique volcanic zones in the world. The conservation of these gigantic craters and the surrounding areas are an important of part of the region's ancient history and culture. Daily self-guided tours are available from 9:00am - 5:00pm.
