Vacationers rent villas for various reasons. Some do it for privacy, eschewing the bothersome crowds you might find stretched out at hotel swimming pools. Others might choose a villa for common sense reasons; a full, standalone home provides more space for families and groups of friends and may be cheaper than a hotel when divided among multiple people. Still others might choose villas for the “wow” factor — that feeling one gets when they open the door to a magnificent home that is all theirs, even if just for a few days.
Whatever the reason, destinations around Mexico offer villas to fit the bill. And travel advisors should note, they can still earn commissions when they choose the right properties.
Among the newest entrants into Mexico’s villa rental segment is a boutique rental firm called Blue Desert, which debuted in 2019 with customized itineraries that include accommodations in private villas, serviced by a concierge team that can arrange an array of activities. The company’s villas have between five and 10 bedrooms, and some of the gated property amenities include infinity pools, outdoor bars, fire pits and private beachside entrances.
Also new in the market is Homes & Villas by Grand Solmar, a luxury vacation division of Solmar Hotels & Resorts. The properties in Solmar’s portfolio offer expansive ocean views and a variety of layouts, including Villa 26, a four-bedroom unit with a family room, a dining room, 3.5 bathrooms, a private pool, a gourmet kitchen, a washer and dryer and a garage. All villa guests have access to the resort amenities at Grand Solmar Rancho San Lucas Resort Golf & Spa, the company’s newest hotel property. Additional amenities and services, available at an extra cost, including pre-stocked groceries and airport transfers.

At Las Ventanas al Paraiso, a Rosewood Resort, the 28,000-square-foot Ty Warner Mansion features just two master suites, assuring that there is much space for relaxing. Amenities include a 328-foot infinity pool and a 9,000-square-foot rooftop terrace with a glass-bottom lap pool, a putting green pool table and a massage pavilion. Designed by architect Jorge Torres, the structure offers panoramic views of the Sea of Cortez and is staffed by a 24-hour team that includes a personal assistant and a butler.
On Mexico’s Caribbean coast, villa options include Playaakun Eco-Luxury Beach Retreat in Tulum, a beachfront property inside the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve [https://www.travelagewest.com/Travel/Mexico/The-Best-Places-to-See-Wildlife-in-Mexico]. The property consists of a five-bedroom, five-bathroom villa with a beachfront infinity pool, a palm garden and a 7,887-square-foot entertainment area and both indoor and outdoor lounge areas. The open-concept kitchen is staffed by a private chef who specializes in using locally sourced produce and fresh seafood.

In the gated resort community of Punta Mita, for example, Journey Mexico features properties such as Casa Tesoro, a seven-bedroom villa with 11 bathrooms, a game room, yoga and cardio rooms and a home theater with a 150-inch screen, laser projector and seating for 20.
Even larger is Casa Tau, a 12-bedroom, 12.5-bathroom villa at Punta Mita’s Rancho Estates development. The property features a Sonos sound system, a gourmet kitchen, an infinity pool, a media room with a 75-inch television, and a staff that includes an estate manager, four butlers, sous chefs and 12 full-time room attendants. Guests at Casa Tau also have access to Kupuri Beach Club, Punta Mita’s Residence Beach Club, watersports at Punta Mita’s pier, Pacifico and Bahia golf courses and Punta Mita Tennis Center. When some people go for a villa, they go big.
