Dallas' Deep Ellum neighborhood is a haven for creative types, evident in its wealth of music venues, art galleries and trendy eateries. The small district, just a few blocks long, is the perfect respite from the busyness of downtown, which is only a 30-minute walk away.
One oasis of cool that lies within Deep Ellum is Hide, a cocktail bar opened in January that serves a plethora of classic and contemporary libations paired with elevated versions of down-home Texas grub.
Take a seat at the counter, which encircles the gorgeously minimalist bar (don't worry: the selection of booze is anything but minimal) and its small hydroponic herb garden. Drinks run the gamut and are categorized as "Classics," "Bottled," "Tapped and Frigid," "Spirited," "Brave," "Comforting" and "Refreshing."
Feeling "Brave"? Try the Darkwing Duck, made with rum, angostura bitters, grand poppy, creme de cacao, pineapple, chamomile, anise and egg white, served up. Looking for something "Refreshing"? Go for the Blue Hair, Don't Care, which features vodka, gin, lillet blanc, italicus, quinquina, lemon, pineapple and lavender, served over crushed ice.
Food options range from light — think ahi poke tacos, a veggie sandwich and different kinds of toast — to indulgent (albeit not overtly so), including a spicy buttermilk-fried chicken sandwich with pickled fresno peppers and rooster sauce that set my taste buds afire. I felt like I had stumbled into a hip Los Angeles eatery; I felt known.
But, this is still Texas, after all, where more is more, and Hide knows its clientele: A happy hour runs Sunday through Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., offering discounted drinks and bites.
