In celebration of the 100th anniversary of that event, the 2011 Ski to Sea Race has been extended to 100 miles from the snows of Mt. Baker to the waters of Bellingham Bay.
Taking place on May 29, 2011, the Ski to Sea race consists of a 100-mile relay race of seven venues encompassing seven different sports. Five hundred teams of eight racers each compete in relay, representing seven popular local sports: cross country skiing, downhill skiing/snowboarding, running, road biking, two-person canoeing, mountain biking and kayaking. A racer can only be on one team, and only complete one leg.
The race begins at 8 a.m. at the Mt. Baker Ski Area, then continues across the county to the finish line in Bellingham's Marine Park near the historic Fairhaven District, where spectators gather for an all day festival including a hometown parade. Other special events and a wide variety of entertainment promise fun for all ages.
