Americans Are Now More Ready Than Ever to Travel

What
Longwoods International, a tourism research organization, has been tracking consumer willingness to travel since COVID-19 lockdowns began. Its latest survey, conducted on June 3, finds a greater interest in resuming travel than any previous study.

Only 69% of Americans say they are changing their travel plans because of the pandemic, down from a peak of 85% on April 8. And 46% of Americans report the pandemic has impacted their travel plans in the next six months, down from a high of 67% of travelers on April 1 — the lowest level since March 11. Other questions — which measured Americans’ willingness to depart from their community, eat at a restaurant and host visitors in their community — also reflect a growing readiness to emerge from lockdown conditions.

Why It Matters
While the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over, the temperature has changed. Summer is here, and many Americans are anxious to leave their homes for a much-needed break. Properties and destinations are reopening with updated hygiene protocols, easing traveler concerns about virus exposure. Ultimately, it’s up to travel advisors to decide if they want to capitalize on the demand to travel. If so, be sure to brush up on domestic options, provide up-to-date advice and set realistic expectations about traveling now.

Fast Facts
- 46% of American travelers support opening their communities to visitors, up 15% from May 13.
- 44% would feel safe traveling outside their communities, up 9% from May 13.
- 44% would feel safe dining in local restaurants and shopping at local stores, up from 31% on May 13.
- Dining at restaurants, shopping and participating in outdoor activities top the wish list of desired experiences for travelers this summer.

What They Are Saying
“Americans are clearly more ready to travel than they have been in months,” said Amir Eylon, president and CEO of Longwoods International. “And they are becoming more confident about welcoming visitors to their communities as well.”
