A new survey conducted by Talker Research on behalf of Discover Puerto Rico highlights the significant role that travel plays in romantic relationships.

According to the research, 73% of couples agree that travel is the ultimate relationship test, with nearly two-thirds (61%) reporting that a specific trip has helped reignite their romance. Additionally, 40% of respondents feel closer to their partner after traveling together.

The survey, which polled 2,000 coupled-up Americans, also revealed that travel experiences can deepen relationships. A quarter of couples (25%) discovered a more romantic side of their partner while on a trip, and 46% feel that a getaway is necessary to reignite the spark in their relationship.

The research also sheds light on compatibility factors that impact traveling together. Budget was the top consideration for 45% of respondents, while hygiene habits and food preferences were also important factors for 36% and 33%, respectively. Travel planning styles were another key consideration, with 63% of couples valuing similar approaches to trip preparation.

Spontaneity emerged as another important element of successful couple travel. A significant 72% of couples believe being spontaneous is essential for meaningful travel experiences. In fact, 60% have taken a spontaneous trip together, and 28% report being open to leaving on a trip at a moment’s notice.

In terms of destination preferences, the Caribbean was identified as the most romantic region by 54% of Americans, followed by Europe (37%) and North America (23%). Puerto Rico was cited as an appealing destination for couples due to its convenience; as a U.S. territory, American couples can visit without the need for a passport.

The survey also found that certain details matter when planning trips. Couples agreed that aspects such as room type, energy levels for activities, and shared interests in cultural or educational experiences contribute to a smoother and more enjoyable vacation. Culinary preferences were also highlighted, with 37% of respondents stating that food experiences significantly influence their choice of destination.

With 70% of couples discussing travel plans weekly, the survey underscores the importance of shared experiences in strengthening relationships. It also demonstrates that travel can be an effective way for couples to connect and explore their compatibility.
