For my 15th birthday, my mother and I took a trip to New York City. One of the reasons I really wanted to go is because I recently got into musicals, and I was very excited to visit Broadway. There are also tons of interesting art exhibits around the city and, coincidently, we were going the same weekend as the New York City Pride Parade, so we were able to experience that as well.
Months before the trip, we had already secured tickets to a few plays, such as “The Band’s Visit” and “Mean Girls: The Musical.” We were also excited to see off-Broadway shows, including the one performed at the La Mama Theatre by a group called Kinding Sindaw, which highlights Filipino culture through dance and legends.
During the trip, we were constantly rushing from one thing to the next. We went from Broadway to the Whitney Museum of American Art to see a really interesting exhibit on protests in the U.S. called, “An Incomplete History of Protest: Selections from the Whitney’s Collection, 1940-2017.” We also did some touristy things, such as walking on the Highline and through the extremely crowded Chelsea Market.
We were able to move around Manhattan and see so much in four short days thanks to the wonderful subway system.

It was a great a trip, and we felt like the city welcomed us into its ranks as true New York lovers.
