Hotel Review: Four Seasons Hotel Sydney

Some five-star hotels feel ultra-luxurious from the moment you step into their grand lobbies. Four Seasons Hotel Sydney is not one of these.

I realized how special this property is only after checking into one of the harbor-view suites, where I was amazed by stunning views of the iconic Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the cruise ship port. The view is indicative of the property’s greatest assets: its upscale, relaxed luxury and its location in the heart of the Sydney Harbour district.

The Four Seasons Sydney is situated just a few hundred yards from the city’s Circular Quay train station (with rail service to and from the airport) and is a five-minute walk from the waterfront area and the opera house. It’s also a short walk to the shopping district called The Rocks and the Royal Botanic Gardens, among other attractions. It’s perfect for visitors staying in Sydney for an extended period of time, as well as for those who are just passing through the city on the way to other Australian destinations.

While not lavish, the 531-room hotel is truly upscale in its amenities and service. My spacious Full Harbour Junior Suite featured awe-inspiring views, contemporary decor and all the modern amenities. It was the ideal combination of sophisticated and comfortable.

Guests can book a room on the 32nd floor that comes with access to the special Club32 lounge. Lounge guests can enjoy breakfast (with a wide variety of dishes, including a made-to-order egg station); all-day snacks and drinks; and a special happy hour that features wine, beer and cocktails, and a wide range of canapes. There is even a s’more preparation station as part of the buffet.

One of the hotel’s best features is its heated outdoor swimming pool (according to the hotel, it’s one of the largest in Sydney) and The Cabana cafe, open from April to September. It’s a great spot for taking a relaxing dip or for doing laps in the 20-meter-long pool — followed by an alfresco lunch or afternoon snack. There’s also a full-service spa and a large fitness center on property, as well.

The hotel’s lobby restaurant is currently undergoing a renovation, but Tables, a pop-up restaurant on the second floor, is excellent. One of my favorite spots was Grain, a hip bar/restaurant just off the hotel’s lobby. It’s a chic, lively spot that is also a favorite of locals. It specializes in unique cocktails, a wide selection of whiskeys and a large dinner menu.

What the Four Seasons Sydney might lack in opulence, it more than makes up for in five-star amenities, accommodations and service. When you consider its ideal location in the heart of the city, the property is a great choice for a wide range of clients heading down under.
