This October marks 10 years since The Fives Hotels & Residences opened its beachfront resort in Riviera Maya.
For a decade, the luxury all-inclusive The Fives Beach Hotel & Residences, Playa Del Carmen has been an integral part of the area’s landscape. Now, it and its parent company are making plans for the future.
As of Oct. 1, the resort, which was a member of Karisma Hotels & Resorts, has severed management ties and owns and operates everything in-house. The resort stresses to travel advisors that this doesn’t change anything in terms of how the resort runs — the staff, restaurants, offerings and loyalty program remain the same.
In fact, many agents know that the AAA Four Diamond resort features pockets and hideaways that make it perfect for couples, friends and families. There are 662 one-, two- and three-bedroom residence-style suites, each with LCD smart televisions, a king or two double beds, a daily stocked minibar, a balcony and more. Each residence suite features a separate living space with a sofa, a kitchen and a dining area, while penthouse suites have private rooftop decks.

Then there’s the three-bedroom penthouse residence, which has 1,623 square feet of interior space, a private rooftop deck, a dining table for six, a barbecue grill, a hot tub, a Bali bed and views over the gardens and pools.
The resort also has five restaurants and bars, serving everything from burgers on the beach to tacos, sushi and ceviche, as well as an assortment of tequila and gin cocktails. One of the most unique dining options is La Casa de Rosa, an interactive cooking experience in a venue designed to look like a typical Mexican hacienda. Guests work alongside the chefs making tortillas, tamales and salsas, then enjoy the dishes at a long family table while sipping mezcal and tequila.
Other resort features include a white-sand beach, seven outdoor pools, an adults-only villa block, a swim-up bar at the Beach Club and a children’s pool at the Kids Club Playhouse. Visitors can book a massage or other treatments at the spa, and a fitness center is open 24 hours. The resort also offers paths through the mangrove forest along wooden platforms, from which it’s possible to see the region’s local wildlife, such as coatis, birds and more.
Looking to 2020, The Fives will be opening a brand-new property on the beach in Puerto Morelos, a sleepy fishing village between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. The Fives Oceanfront, Puerto Morelos will have 115 one-, two- and three-bedroom suites, as well as a Private Beach Club (rumored to be a partnership with Rohan Marley, one of Bob Marley’s sons). The hotel will have an outdoor infinity pool and several restaurants, the details of which are yet to be confirmed. The resort is still under construction, but it will sit on a stretch of powdery beach that is walking distance to Puerto Morelos.
