During a recent visit to Mexico, I found myself wandering along a solitary path through lush jungle, admiring a a towering Mayan ruin as I stooped to photograph a pair of majestic iguanas beneath a canopy of trees populated with gently warbling birds. I felt like I was the only person on earth.
Funny thing is, I was in the heart of the Cancun Hotel Zone, one of the most densely developed tourist areas in Mexico.
That moment was a welcome reminder that this world-famous destination is much more than just all-inclusive resorts and buffet lines. Some people may never venture off property after checking in, but those who do will find that the Cancun Hotel Zone offers lots of diversions — from ancient ruins to shopping, dining and entertainment — all just minutes away from the many hotels that dot the beach-lined coast. The relatively compact size of this vacation hotspot makes it easy to enjoy diverse activities without long travel times.
Here are six worthwhile things to do in the Cancun Hotel Zone.
Admire Mayan Ruins
You don’t need to take a lengthy day trip to learn about Mayan culture in Cancun.
Museo Maya de Cancun (Maya Museum of Cancun) anchors the Hotel Zone’s cultural scene with distinctly modern architecture that’s a striking contrast to the ancient Mayan relics inside. I admired centuries-old artifacts from Palenque, Chichen Itza and Comalcalco before heading outside to the San Miguelito archaeological site, where a Mayan civilization peaked between 1200 and 1350.
The museum and site are located in front of Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe All-Inclusive Resort where I was staying, an easy stroll away. (Note: During my visit, the museum had no air conditioning or elevator service, so travelers with mobility concerns or looking to avoid the heat may want to check before visiting.)

Playa Delfines — one of TripAdvisor’s top-ranked Mexican beaches — is located at kilometer 20 in the Hotel Zone. All beaches in Cancun are technically public, but this is one of the few that’s not blocked by hotels, so it attracts lots of sun worshippers with its white sands, turquoise waters and picture-perfect “Cancun” sign.
On the opposite side of Kukulcan Boulevard (the Hotel Zone’s main thoroughfare), the 7,400-acre Nichupte Lagoon is an idyllic place for peaceful, water-based activities. Go Kayak Cancun, offers sunrise and sunset kayak tours that take in the beauty of the mangrove forests, with opportunities to spot fauna including birds, reptiles and fish.
Stroll the Mall
Don’t be turned off by the word “mall” — La Isla Cancun is much more than that. This large, mostly open-air complex offers shopping, dining and various types of entertainment. Vacationers can browse brands ranging from the chic Armani Exchange to the more economical Pull & Bear, as well as head to onsite attractions such as the 230-foot Sky Wheel Cancun, a gigantic Ferris wheel offering panoramic views of the Caribbean and the lagoon.

Slated to open before the end of this year at La Isla is Babylon Park, an indoor theme park with rides and arcade games.
Delight the Palate
Hotels in Cancun have upped their culinary game in recent years, but the Hotel Zone’s array of diverse restaurants still makes it worth heading off property. At La Isla, for example, foodies can enjoy beautiful lagoon views while savoring sushi at Kai, Thai specialties at Elefanthai and steaks at Sonora Grill.
Elsewhere along Kukulcan Boulevard, Taste of India is the go-to-place for South Asian delicacies, while Rosa Negra serves Latin American fusion cuisine complemented by live shows and elaborate table presentations.
Get Some Thrills
Located just outside the Hotel Zone in Plaza Las Americas, Battle Kart Cancun keeps the adrenaline flowing with its fleet of electric go-carts and variety of challenging game modes.
Thrills of a different kind are available in the waters just off the shores of Cancun, where the Underwater Museum of Art, known as MUSA, features dozens of large submerged sculptures that can be viewed while diving, snorkeling or riding in a glass-bottom boat.
Be a Night Owl
Cancun’s nightlife is legendary — and with good reason. Among the after-dark stalwarts is Coco Bongo, where the dance floor isn’t the only thing that attracts revelers; the venue hosts shows with Vegas style acrobats, dance performances and a live show inspired by the movie “Moulin Rouge.”
For a seated alternative, consider Myst at Arena Cancun (located at La Isla), an experience that includes food, drinks and a live show with music in English and Spanish.
