Uniworld Boutique River Cruises’ S.S. Sphinx sailed its first cruise in Egypt on Sept. 23.
“As Egypt continues to be a top trending travel destination, we’re overjoyed to set sail along the famed Nile River and provide an unmatched look at the destination onboard our striking new Super Ship, the S.S. Sphinx,” said Ellen Bettridge, CEO and president of Uniworld, in a press release. “Everything from the artwork to the ceilings to the ship’s bow was thought out and sourced by the local community."
As a Super Ship, S.S. Sphinx showcases a high crew-to-guest ratio, a swimming pool, a massage room and 42 guest suites, all of which have French balconies. For dining, the ship offers a private dining room and an alfresco experience on the upper deck.
The cuisine onboard specifically highlights local flavors such as Egyptian beef liver, veel fatteh (chickpea flatbread), sweet corn soup, mulukhiya Egyptian bread, and hawawshi (meat-filled pita), as well as regional Egyptian wines such as Omar Khayyam and Shahrazade.
In an effort toward sustainability, Egyptian art, furnishings and other materials are also locally sourced. Shipboard ceilings are crowned by hand-carved blonde wood, and banquettes are upholstered in fabric from a local company.
S.S. Sphinx sails on Uniworld’s 12-day Splendors of Egypt & The Nile itinerary roundtrip from Cairo. Featured attractions along the way include the Temple of Karnak, Temple of Hatshepsut and temples dedicated to Hathor, Horus and others. The famed Egyptian Museum and artifacts from the tomb of King Tutankhamun are also on display.
Voyages include river-view accommodations, shipboard meals, premium spirits and wine, shore excursions, airport transfers, onboard gratuities and Wi-Fi internet access.
