New York City offers endless possibilities for foodies with a taste for everything, so it can be hard to know where to start. But the perfect place to jump headfirst into the city’s vibrant food scene is the historic Chelsea Market, a labyrinthine indoor food hall and shopping center that sells everything from jerk chicken and baked goods to gelato and stationery. Comprising an entire city block and located in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan, the market offers delicious smells that constantly assail the senses — making it impossible to exit the area without spilling cash and filling your stomach.
As a sworn cheese-lover (lactose intolerance be damned), I made a beeline straight for Big Mozz, a vendor that serves all things mozzarella. I suggest the signature mozzarella sticks. Or, opt for the plump, pesto-filled (or plain) burrata, paired with arugula salad, buttered toast and prosciutto. I went for the latter option and was not disappointed. It was every bit as savory and Instagram-worthy as the shop’s social media suggested, and the portion was generous enough that two could split it for a hearty snack. The market’s bustling weekend atmosphere only added to the liveliness of the food — families, couples and tourists thronged the stalls, eager to sample a bite of bread here and a cup of coffee there.
Indeed, the possibilities are endless even on this compact block of precious New York City real estate.
