Review: Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

The real estate adage about the desirability of “location, location, location” certainly holds true in the hospitality industry — especially when it’s a hotel such as Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton.

I’ve visited Los Cabos many times, but I never had the pleasure of staying in the heart of historic San Jose del Cabo, the charming small town known for its art galleries and laid-back vibe. On my most recent trip, however, I finally got to have that experience, at one of the town’s newest hotels.

After extensive renovation and rebranding, the former Tropicana Inn reopened in late 2024 as Tropicana Los Cabos, one of the newest members of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection.

The hotel’s artistic vibe — which is especially appropriate, given the town’s reputation as a haven for art lovers — was visible from the moment I arrived. Public spaces are adorned with eye-catching, original contemporary art — including sculptures by British-Mexican surrealist Leonora Carrington. The exhibited art lends a sophisticated air to the 70-room property, yet it still felt supremely comfortable and welcoming.

The hotel's location is one of its greatest selling points. The building fronts Mijares Boulevard in downtown San Jose del Cabo, and I enjoyed strolling the streets every morning and evening. The main plaza is just a block away, and it’s a quick walk to a variety of art galleries, boutiques and restaurants. For guests looking to focus on the charms of San Jose del Cabo, there’s no need to rent a car.

Hotel Features

Tropicana Los Cabos adeptly combines traditional decor and extensive modern amenities. Guestrooms and suites are arranged around a central courtyard, where a full-size heated pool, a whirlpool and bright bougainvillea serve as the hotel’s relaxing focal point.

My room had a lovely shaded balcony with a courtyard view, and I found myself lounging there often. Room amenities include a 55-inch HD television, 300-thread count linens, feather-alternative pillows and wonderfully strong Wi-Fi.

Though affiliated with the Hilton brand (which is surely a plus for clients who are Hilton Honors members), Tropicana Los Cabos retains the intimate feel of an independent property — likely thanks to the fact that it’s operated by Hamak Hotels, a Mexican company known for stylish boutique properties with local flavor. (The company also oversees Casona Roma Norte, a property in Mexico City at which I stayed earlier this year.) Later this year, Hamak will debut Perla La Paz, Tapestry Collection by Hilton in La Paz, Baja California Sur.

Unique Experiences at Tropicana Los Cabos

Cuisine is another area where Tropicana Los Cabos excels, as I learned during my very first lunch (of delicious pork belly). The hotel has two signature dining venues: Cocina de las Californias, which offers a farm-to-table-inspired menu that draws on the culinary traditions of the Californias; and El Patio, which focuses on Baja-Mediterranean fusion dishes.

Special events provide still more surprises. On one evening during my stay, there was a guest chef pop-up dinner, complemented by a live performance by an opera singer in the main dining room and tasty cocktails from the hotel’s Bar Mision. I also enjoyed a yoga session on a shady, open-air terrace, as well as a fabulous massage at the beautiful small spa. The hotel also has a co-working lounge that’s perfect for digital nomads. There is no gym, but guests have access to a nearby fitness center — and loaner bikes are free for those who would like to explore the town on two wheels.

Tropicana partners with Veleros Beach Club to provide access to a swimmable beach that’s just a few minutes away by car. Guests can reserve sun beds or cabanas directly through the front desk and receive a free mocktail upon arrival; food and beverage credits are included with the fee for renting sun beds and cabanas at the beach club.

Another highlight of my stay was a fascinating day trip I took with High Tide Los Cabos, which the hotel arranged. The 6.5-hour Jeep tour whisked us in less than two hours to the historic town of Santiago, and we also stopped at a beautiful desert oasis and nature preserve, as well as the Tropic of Cancer visitor center.

Something for Everyone

Tropicana Los Cabos appeals to various types of travelers; it’s pet-friendly (with a 20-pound weight limit for dogs and a modest fee), and weddings and small events are another specialty. During my stay, I viewed attractive setups for intimate ceremonies and celebrations. The hotel has more than 8,300 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space and can accommodate up to 130 guests, and its small size also makes it ideal for destination wedding buyouts.

In the end, what I appreciated the most about Tropicana Los Cabos was its ability to combine diverse elements — thoughtful amenities, superior cuisine and an appreciation for the arts — and package it all in a wonderfully convenient location that offers a real sense of place. It’s ideal for clients who value excellent dining, artistic flair, reasonable room rates and proximity to the delights of San Jose del Cabo.
